The LG Tone+ is one of the best stereo Bluetooth earbuds in the under $75 category.  The Tone+ (HBS 730) is the new and improved version of the older but popular LG Tone (HBS 700).  The Tone+ is worn around the neck with the earbuds extending from wires.  This takes most of the weight of the device off your ears, greatly increasing comfort.  The earbuds dock on to the Tone+ and are held in place by small magnets when not in use.  Users love this; it provides convenient storage for the earbuds and prevents you from taking off, forgetting, and ultimately losing your earbuds.  Unfortunately, the magnets are not very strong, and the earbuds will disconnect if bumped or disturbed too much by jackets, seat belts, or anything that might brush against them.  The Tone+ weighs only 1.13 oz; it’s easy to wear around your neck all day and forget it’s even there when not in use.

The Tone+ comes in Black, White, Orange, Pink, and Teal colors, but honestly the black and white look great, the others…not so much.  It also comes with 3 different sizes of silicon tips; one will likely fit you pretty well.  The tips fit in the ear snuggly and provide fairly excellent noise muffling.  This is great for blocking out background noise, but you are effectively wearing earplugs; something to keep in mind if you need to hear your outside environment.

The Tone+ holds up to sweat, but runners give it mixed reviews.  The earbuds stay in place well, but running can cause the Tone+ collar to bounce up and down on your collar bone.  Since it’s barely over an once in weight, many runners don’t even notice this.  Others use the collar of their shirt to hold the Tone+ in place, but some find the bouncing intolerably annoying.  The Tone+ is fine in the gym, but multiple users complain about the collar moving back and forth while doing sit-ups.

Controls

The controls are well placed and can be conveniently accessed without having to look down at the Tone+.  On your left (while wearing the Tone+), you have easy access to the phone Answer/End button and the up/down volume buttons.  On your right side, you will find the Play/Pause button and the skip forward/backwards buttons.  The buttons provide nice tactile and audible feedback when pressed.

Features

The Tone+ will instantly connect to two different smartphones or other Bluetooth devices.  It vibrates to notify you of incoming calls and can read your SMS text messages to you if you have an Android device.  The headset microphone can be muted by holding both the volume up and down buttons simultaneously for a second.  LG claims the Tone+ has noise canceling technology, but users are divided on the effectiveness with some claiming it generally works well and others reporting problems with calls in noisy environments.  There are three equalizer modes to customize your listening experience: Normal, Bass Boost, and Treble Boost.

Performance

According to LG, the Tone+ has “built in apt-X Technology which reproduces CD-quality sound.”  I doubt anyone knows what that means, but users unanimously agree that the sound quality is very good for this price range and is greatly improved over the older Tone (HBS 700).  The mid and high range is clear and crisp while the bass is acceptable.  For the same money, wired earbuds will sound better, but users are pleased with the sound in a Bluetooth headset at this price.

Battery performance is excellent.  LG claims 15 hours of talk time, 10 hours of music playback, and 500 hours of standby time.  Users report the batteries will fully charge within as little as 90 minutes to under 2 hours.

Users are generally happy with the wireless range and report the Tone+ works fine even when 15-30+ feet away from their smartphone.

Calls are clear on both ends with few reported issues except when the Tone+ is used in a noisy environment.

Customer Comments

Overall, Amazon users like the Tone+, giving it 4.1 out of 5 stars with over 3400 reviews (a very impressive score for this many reviews).  They like the design, and the sound.  They do note that the wires connecting the earbuds are a bit on the thick side.  This can cause them to stick out and get caught on seat belts or jackets.  Because the LG Tone+ is so popular, there are many low quality counterfeits being sold.  Multiple users complained of receiving a counterfeit model, so if you choose to go with the Tone+, make sure you buy it from a reputable store.

Pros

  • Great design, easy to wear all day with convenient earbud storage
  • Great sound for the price range
  • Excellent battery life
  • Buttons are conveniently placed and offer a lot of control

Cons

  • Earbuds can dislodge from magnetic cradles
  • Hit and miss noise cancelation for microphone
  • Collar will bounce up/down while jogging, and move back and forth during sit ups

Summary

The LG Tone+ is a one of the best wireless bluetooth headsets under $75.  It’s ideal for an active person who wants to listen to music all day while making an occasional phone call.  It can be used for sports/running/working out, but I would not recommend it if that’s your primary use.  Overall, it does everything well with only a few minor hiccups and is a great value for the money.  Update: before buying the LG Tone+, you may want to consider the updated and largely improved version, the LG Tone Pro (HBS 750).
