LG Electronics introduced the Tone HBS 700 in early 2011.  In 2013, LG added Apt-X to improve the music quality, and released the updated version as the Tone+ HBS 730 (see our review here).  In early, 2014 LG updated the popular Tone+ and released the Tone Pro HBS 750.  In the Tone Pro HBS 750, LG addresses many of the complaints users had with the HBS 730.

Like the Tone+, The Tone Pro is worn around the neck with the earbuds extending from wires.  This takes most of the weight off your ears and greatly increases comfort.  The earbuds dock on to the Tone Pro and are held in place by small magnets when not in use.  This provides convenient storage for the earbuds and prevents you from taking off, forgetting, and ultimately losing your earbuds.  The magnets on the Tone+ were weak and users complained the earbuds would come lose if disturbed.  In the Tone Pro, the earbuds rest in a deep recess which protects them from becoming accidentally dislodged.

Like the Tone+, the Tone Pro can handle sweat and exercise.  However, LG contoured the neckband of the Tone Pro to better fit your neck and shoulders.  This increases comfort and reduces neckband movement during exercise such as running or sit-ups (a minor flaw in the Tone+).  The Tone Pro is sleek, stylish, and weighing in at only 1.23 oz, it’s comfortable.  It is ideal for wearing all day, whether in the gym, at home, in the office, or in social gatherings.

The Tone Pro is available in Black, White, Teal/Grey, and Gold colors and comes with 2 different sizes of earbud tips.  The tips fit in the ear snuggly and provide fairly excellent noise muffling.  This is great for blocking out background noise, but you are effectively wearing earplugs; something to keep in mind if you need to hear your outside environment.

Controls

The Tone Pro’s buttons are located along the side of the neckband, giving it a much cleaner look compared to the older Tone+.

When wearing the Tone Pro, the play/pause button and track forward/backward rocker are on the right, while the answer/end call button and volume up/down rocker are on the left.

The microphone can be muted by holding both the volume up and down buttons simultaneously for a second.

Features

The Tone Pro has Bluetooth 3.0 technology and can be connected to up to 2 devices simultaneously.  The microphone has echo and noise canceling technology, and users report these features work well; callers cannot hear normal background noises.  The neckband vibrates to alert you of incoming calls, and the Tone Pro can read your text messages aloud to you if your are using an Android device.

Performance

All the LG Tone products have best in class battery life, and the Tone Pro is no exception.  The Tone Pro provides up to 15 hours of talk time, 10 hours of music playback, and 21 days of standby time.  Naturally, your results will vary depending on the volume level, but users are unanimously impressed with the battery life.

Users are generally pleased with the music quality of the Tone Pro.  It is slightly improved over the Tone+ but neither are audiophile grade.

Call quality is excellent and significantly improved over the Tone+.  Calls are clear and sharp on both ends and the echo and noise cancelation features of the microphone make a noticeable difference.  You can make calls without normal background noise being transmitted through the microphone.

The Bluetooth wireless range is standard, but users note that the original LG Tone HBS 700 had better range.

Summary

The LG Tone Pro is a minor upgrade to the popular and excellent LG Tone+.  The neckband fits better, the earbuds stay docked on the neckband better, and call quality is significantly improved.  Music playback gets a minor (if even unnoticeable improvement), and the Tone Pro has a cleaner, more stylish look.  The Tone Pro are ideal for someone who wants their Bluetooth earbuds with them all day.  The neckband is light and stylish, and you can dock the earbuds on it when you’re not listening to music.  You can wear these to the gym, office, or any social gathering; they do everything well without any significant flaws.
