Plantronics have been experts in wearable mobile communications technology for over 50 years.  The brand is synonymous with high-quality and caters to a wide spectrum of customers including avid gamers, telecommunication specialists, business professionals, runners, and sports enthusiasts.  In July 2013, Plantronics released the Back Beat Go 2, an improved version of the Back Beat Go (2012).  In 2014, The Backbeat Go received PCMAG’s Editor’s Choice award and was a CES Innovation Award Winner.

Weighing only 14-grams, the BackBeat Go 2 is one of the smallest and lightest Bluetooth-enabled earbuds on the market.  They are sweat-proof, but unfortunately users are divided on the comfort and fit.  Some runners report the BackBeat Go 2 stay in their ears and are comfortable with no issues over extended (5+ miles) runs, while others report they constantly have to adjust the earbuds or put them back in their ears after they fall out.  Several users report that the long cord sticks to their back after they get sweaty and pulls on the earbuds jarring them lose.

Like most wired earbuds, the BackBeat Go 2 fit snugly in the inner ear canal and effectively block out most external noise.  This is great for blocking out annoying sounds, but keep in mind that you will not be able to hear important sounds (cars) or have a conversation without taking at least one earbud out.

The BackBeat Go 2 come in either black or white.  A charging pouch, 3 different sizes of earbud covers, and one pair of earlobe stabilizers are also included.

Features

The Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 comes with a protective battery pouch that charges the earbuds when not in use.  About 20 minutes in the pouch is worth an additional 1 hour of use.   The charging pouch has a small battery icon on the lower right.  Pressing it activates two LEDs at the bottom of the case. The first one indicates the battery level of the charging pouch, and the second one indicates the charging status of the BackBeat Go 2.

The Go 2 will remember and sync with up to 8 different Bluetooth devices and the microphone has echo cancellation technology.

Performance

The Plantronics Back Beat Go 2 has a short battery life at only 4.5 hours of listening time, however if you are diligent about storing the buds in the included charging pouch, the battery life is extended to 14.5 hours.  iPad and iPhone users will see an on-screen battery meter while Android 4.0+ smartphone and Android 3.0+ tablet users will be able to check the batter level with the free Plantronics battery Widget.  The Back Beat Go 2 will hibernate when not in use preserving battery life.

The Go 2 does not have aptX technology, but most users are pleased with the music playback quality, however some report the bass is shallow and the sound is flat.  Users are generally satisfied with the call quality reporting that the connection is great on both ends even in a mildly noisy background.

Users also love the BackBeat Go 2’s connectivity.  The headset automatically syncs with paired devices and the wireless range is about 25-30 feet.

Customer Comments

Amazon customers gave the BackBeat Go 2 3.6 out of 5 stars with over 1100 reviews.   Most users are pleased with the music playback quality but some find the Go 2 lacks bass and sounds thin and flat.  Phone calls and connectivity are great.  Many users are pleased with the comfort and fit during exercise, but others complain the earbuds have to be constantly adjusted and fall out while jogging.  Users note that the Backbeat Go 2 earbuds are significantly larger than their wired counterparts and some complain of ear fatigue after extended periods of use.

Users are pleased with the design and build quality.  The flat linguine style neck-cord doesn’t tangle easily, and the BackBeat Go 2 feels durable and strong.  The BackBeat Go 2 can be purchased with or without the charging pouch, and not all users are convinced it is worth the extra cost.  The pouch is small and soft; some users prefer a larger hard case for protecting their Bluetooth earbuds.

The controls are adequate but users note that while tracks can be skipped forward and backwards, they cannot be rewound or fast forwarded.   Finally, there are some quality control issues as a small number of users reported receiving a defective product that stopped functioning after only a few weeks.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Good music playback quality
  • Good phone call quality
  • Plantronics engineering and build quality

Cons

  • May not stay in place while running
  • Poor battery life

Summary

The Plantronics Back Beat Go 2 Bluetooth earbuds were an excellent offering back in 2013, but technology has advanced significantly since then.  If you find a pair at a discount price, they are still solid performers but be prepared to charge them every 4-5 hours and don’t expect them to be rock solid in your ears during strenuous exercise like running or Crossfit.  If you are looking for Bluetooth earbuds specifically for running or exercise, be sure to check out our top recommendations for even better choices.
